摘要

Colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy is used by E. M. Benetti, N. D. Spencer, and co-workers in article 1300007 to investigate the mechanical and tribological properties of brush-gel systems under a good solvent (for the brush). While combined nanoindentation and adhesion measurements show clear indications of the brush-gel architecture, it is tribological measurements that confirm the layered structure: at small sliding amplitudes, the probe remains stationary on the gel and the brush stretches. Only once the restoring force of the brush exceeds the static friction on the gel does the probe begin to slide.
