Robust Interfaces and Advanced Materials: Critical Designs and Challenges for High-Performance Supercapacitors

With the growing global energy demand and the pressing need for a clean energy transition, supercapacitors (SCs) have demonstrated significant application potential in electric vehicles, wearable electronics, and renewable energy storage systems owing to their rapid charge–discharge capability, exceptional power density, and prolonged cycle life. The improvement of their overall performance fundamentally depends on the synergistic design of electrode materials and electrolyte systems, as well as the precise regulation of the electrode-electrolyte interface. This review focuses on the key components of supercapacitors, systematically reviewing the design strategies of high-performance electrode materials, outlining recent advances in novel electrolyte systems, and comprehensively discussing the critical roles of interfacial reinforcement and optimization in enhancing device energy density, power performance, and cycling stability. Furthermore, interfacial engineering strategies and innovations in device architecture are proposed to address interfacial degradation in flexible SCs under mechanical stress. Finally, key future research directions are highlighted, including the development of high-voltage and wide-temperature-range electrolyte systems and the integrated advancement of multiscale in situ characterization techniques and theoretical modeling. This review aims to provide theoretical guidance and innovative strategies for material design, contributing toward the realization of next-generation supercapacitors with enhanced energy density and reliability.

Adjuvant Tracer Strategy Combined with a Portable Steam Penetration Gas Membrane Separation Device for Peroxynitrite Detection

Sample pretreatment is an indispensable part of the analysis of complex biological matrices to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analytical results, but it is rather difficult to develop a miniaturized and portable strategy to minimize matrix interference. In light of the difficulties resulted by interference from biological matrices and the short half-life of some constituents, this work introduces a combination of an adjuvant tracer with a high-efficiency and portable sample pretreatment device, the portable steam penetration gas membrane separation (PSPGMS) device, achieving analysis of complex biological samples under the interference of matrices. In this work, methanol was utilized as adjuvant to capture free ONOO– in living cells under UV irradiation for its low background signal and eco-friendliness; the PSPGMS device conducted all-in-one separation, absorption, and derivatization for the detection of formaldehyde generated by the oxidization between methanol and the products of ONOO– photolysis, achieving a linear response (R2 = 0.9919) across 2.0–20.0 μmol/L and a recovery rate of 87.4–115.0% in the analysis of rat hepatocytes. With a detection limit of 0.5 μmol/L, excellent portability, and integration, this strategy is well-suited for on-site rapid and visualized detection, independent of bulky and expensive instruments.

Cover Feature: Molecule-Based Transistors: From Macroscale to Single Molecule.

The cover picture shows the state-of-the-art strategies capable of constructing molecule-based field-effect transistors (FETs), whose performance can be achieved by various external controls, through molecular and device design from macroscale to nanoscale and even single molecule. The development challenges of single-molecule FETs and proposed prospects for further breakthroughs in this field are also discussed. See the Personal Account by P. Li, C. Jia, and X. Dynamic pneumatic rails enabled microdroplet manipulation

This study presented a convenient method of gathering, splitting, merging, and sorting microdroplets by dynamic pneumatic rails in double-layered microfluidic devices. In these devices, the pneumatic rails were placed below the droplet channel, with a thin elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film between them. The PDMS film would sag down to the rail channel, forming a groove pattern at the bottom of the droplet channel, when the fluid pressure in the droplet channel was higher than the air pressure in the rail channel. The groove could capture the flattened droplets and guide the flow path of them due to the lowered surface energy when they extended into the groove. We have designed different components consisting of pneumatic rails to split, merge and sort droplets, and demonstrated that the components maintained good performance in manipulating droplets only by controlling the air pressure. Furthermore, a pneumatic rail-based sorter has been successfully used to sort out single-cell droplets. The pneumatic rail can be integrated into pneumatic valve-based microfluidic devices to be a flexible tool for droplet-based biological and chemical analysis.

A graphene-like nanoribbon for efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are conducive to full exposure of catalyst sites, which can be used to synthesize highly efficient electrocatalysts. However, the design of stable and efficient GNR catalysts remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel iron and cobalt co-doped carbon-based catalyst (C-MP-FeCo) with a GNR structure has been developed by a facile and one-step heat-treatment method. C-MP-FeCo is an excellent bifunctional electrocatalyst for low potential difference ΔE between the oxygen-evolution reaction and oxygen-reduction reaction (ΔEC-MP-FeCo = 0.70 V vs. ΔE(Pt/C+RuO2) = 0.765 V). The maximum power reached 331 mW cm−2 at 0.97 V for a Zn–air battery derived from the C-MP-FeCo catalyst, and with the Pt/C + RuO2 catalyst it was only 249 mW cm−2 at 0.89 V; also, better discharge performance, voltage efficiency and durability were delivered by the former catalyst. Our findings show that the main methods of increasing electrocatalytic activity are (1) forming GNRs and exposing active sites, and (2) exploiting the synergistic effects of Fe, Co, N, and F.
