Cover image by Zhenzhong Yang. Janus colloids consist of two distinct surfaces with different physical or chemical properties. The amphiphilic nature of the surface and the functional performance of the colloid are integrated. Janus colloids provide new tools that can effectively engineer interfaces (or surfaces). They are promising as responsive particulate surfactants, interfacial compatibilizers, building blocks for robust coatings with unique wettability, and in the separation of oil/water mixtures.
